Six Flags Great America
'Travel to the Yukon Kids Territory'
Gilfillan Callahan Nelson Architects loves to have fun, and we demonstrated just that by designing an exciting space for children.
Commissioned to design The Yukon Kids Territory for the popular amusement park Six Flags Great America in Gurnee, we began the project by revisiting our childhood memories of theme parks. We imagined a mix of giant, building timbers and cartoon-themed props for the territory known as Camp Cartoon Network and Looney Toons National Park.
The theme of cartoon imagery is reflected in the architectural elements designed especially for younger visitors-- from the crooked windows, all the way to the sagging rooflines. We scaled down the design elements so kids could have that "grown-up" feel as they entered this territory of fun and imagination. The use of colors and textures helped make this experience appealing to kids if all ages.
